RESOLUTIONS ISSUED AT THE END OF THE ANNUAL PLENARY MEETING OF THE PONTIFICAL MISSIONARY UNION (PMU) IN NIGERIA HELD FROM 10TH – 12TH MARCH, 2015 AT ST. GABRIEL'S PASTORAL CENTRE OZUBULU, NNEWI DIOCESE, ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA
Greetings in the Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!
We the members of the Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU)in Nigeria after prayerful and reflective deliberations, issue the following resolutions at the end of our annual plenary meeting:
Our immense gratitude goes to God Almighty for His love and mercy. We thank Him for his sustenance upon us and upon the entire Churchand for granting us the privilege of being missionaries in His Vineyard. We also express our gratitude to our Host, Most Rev. Hilary OdiliOkeke, and the Bishop of NnewiDiocese for his paternal solicitude. We appreciate our esteemed immediate past PMS National Director,Monsignor HyppoliteAdigwe whose august presence was a source of encouragement to us.
The Pontifical Missionary Union is the “soul of the other Pontifical Mission Societies”. Our Primary objective is to stimulate Missionary Formation and awareness among Priests, Members of Institutes of Consecrated Life, andSocieties of Apostolic Life.
We congratulate the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria on the recent elevation of some priests to the Episcopal Order. We will not also fail to acknowledge the recent appointment of Fr. Tobias Osigwe and Fr. Solomon Zakuas NationalCoordinators of the Pontifical MissionaryUnionand Pontifical Society of the Propagation of Faith respectively.
FOSTERING PMU IN DIOCESES
We encourage all priests and consecrated persons to take seriously the activities of PMU, Because of the urgency of the need for new evangelization. In like vein, the gospel of PMU will be properly propagated if a reasonable majority is addressed. Consequently, we appeal to our Bishops to grant the PMS Directors as well as PMU Coordinators of their Dioceses the opportunity to address gatherings of Priests and Religious when ever this is possible, on the spirit of PMU and allow the Union to be inaugurated in their Dioceses with their full support and blessing.
THE BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY.
We are very much aware of the high level of insecurity in our Country today due to the continuous disturbance of Boko Haram terrorists in the north eastern part of the country. As aresult of this mayhem, ‘innocent lives have been lost and many have been displaced and separated from their loved ones’. We sympathize with the victims of violence, and especially with our fellow Missionaries who have been affected in one way or the other. We pray that this experience becomes a thing of the past soonest.
GENERAL ELECTIONS 2015
We are fully aware that our nation is at the verge of another democratic transition. We encourage all well meaning Nigerians who are eligible voters to go out and exercise their franchise by voting their conscience and not to be intimidated by desperate Politicians. We also urge the media to give all candidates and Political parties equal opportunities.
CELEBRATIONS AND EVENTS
We are delighted to mention the fact that the 2015 PMS National Directory which is its second edition is out. In addition, with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria approval to celebrate the third National Mission Congress (NAMICON III) on 1st – 5th of October 2015 in Abuja, we exhort all Diocesesand especially our members to key into the CBCN approval at their own Levels.
YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
he year of consecrated life is on-going. We encourage all Consecrated Persons, male and female, tomaximize this opportunity as a means of spiritual renewal and intense reflection on the identity and mission of the consecrated Persons in the Church and Society;particularly as regards Fidelity to the Evangelical Counsels.
Our hope is that God, who is the father of all, may give us the grace to remain faithful to our missionary commitment. We rely on Mary the Patroness of all Missionaries to guide us and to intercede for us.
